In 1937 she worked in the office of architect Ely Jacques Kahn in order to ensure that the architectural details and terminology were accurate. Rand did extensive research while writing the novel. She wanted the novel to be imbued with a spirit of individualism and to convey the idea that "man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress" ( The Fountainhead, front matter). ![]() The Fountainhead contains an undeveloped form of Rand's philosophical beliefs. That new faith is Individualism in all its deepest meaning and implications, such as has never been preached before: individualism of the spirit, of ethics, of philosophy. or the sterile, hopeless cynicism of the modern age. ![]() In her notes on The Fountainhead she writes about the book as a whole:Ī new set of values is need to combat this modern dreariness, whether it be communism. Rand took extensive preliminary notes for all of her books. While most people consider Atlas Shrugged her most important work, The Fountainhead was responsible for Ayn Rand's sudden leap into public life. To their surprise, the work quickly became a word-of-mouth bestseller. When The Fountainhead was released in 1943, Rand's publishers did not expect much from it. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments The blue sweater book![]() Eleven years later in Africa, she spotted a young boy wearing that very sweater, with her name still on the tag inside. Apollo, the son of Leto and Zeus, angered by the king, brought an evil plague on the army, so that the men were dying, for the son of Atreus had dishonoured Chryses the priest. Sing of it from the moment when Agamemnon, Atreus’ son, that king of men, parted in wrath from noble Achilles. Goddess, sing me the anger, of Achilles, Peleus’ son, that fatal anger that brought countless sorrows on the Greeks, and sent many valiant souls of warriors down to Hades, leaving their bodies as spoil for dogs and carrion birds: for thus was the will of Zeus brought to fulfilment.
6/26/2023 0 Comments The Bride's Farewell by Meg Rosoff![]() Those who have no place make their own: Esther’s world is her caravan and Pell and Dogman will stay in his cottage. I was surprised by the harshness of the human characters and communities – very small worlds, where neighbours have to conform or they are treated suspiciously. Actually the whole novel depicts the countryside as nurturing, even though the weather may be harsh, people become like animals, sheltering and preserving what little food they can, striving for survival. Rather like animals sharing their existence. And the romance.so understated (we never learn what the Dogman's name is!) Pell & he are perfect equals – working quietly alongside each other. Complex plot, rather like a rough roundabout: characters get on, fall by the wayside, meet up again.all have a part to play in Pell's story. ![]() ![]() Hauntingly stoic characters, taking charge of their own destinies. In describing African people, Wainaina emphasises the distinction between using ‘The People’ for Black Africans and ‘People’ for Africans who are not Black in order to maintain the idea of sameness of Black African identity. Its intended audience is Western journalists who continuously reinforce narratives of Africa as being on the one hand, dependent and weak, and on the other, a place of significant natural beauty and culture, ideal for a holiday to escape ‘reality’. Wainaina’s diction plays into a Eurocentric fetish for exoticism, issuing instructions to use words like ‘Darkness’, ‘Safari’, ‘Zulu’, and ‘Shadow’ when talking or writing about Africa. As a tool for reinforcing a singular narrative, he consistently promotes the usage of ambiguity and generalizations when describing the continent. ‘How to Write about Africa’ provides a Westernized view of the continent as a homogenous place and people, dependent on the charity of the Occident. This piece exposes the Orientalist narrative on the continent and highlights the neo-colonial tendency to reinforce structural stereotypes and prejudices. ![]() Summed up in two sentences, this is the representation of Africa by Binyavanga Wainaina in his ‘scathingly satirical’ piece, ‘How to Write about Africa’.
